The Airbnb / HotelTonight Deal Should Be Stopped
I love Airbnb and HotelTonight - they're both awesome products. But they should remain separate.
If this goes through, we've effectively learned nothing as a society. We let big tech companies (like Facebook) acquire competitors, creating monopolistic giants that have had the ability to not put their users interests at heart (for instance, being lax on privacy, sweeping the rug out from under businesses and content creators, etc).
This will be worse if we allow it to happen in the so-called service economy, where users have to pay. If consolidation happens there (e.g. Airbnb acquiring competitors), not only will we have the same risks we did with social media consolidation, but there will be pricing risks since these businesses are transactional.
