Why do you loathe them?
- Joe-Z 8y agoDon't know the GP's intention, but coming from a small tourist-heavy city, it can really fuck with the local housing market and make an already dire situation even worse. Also: What are the rules for flagging on HN? Can people not express opinions here? For reference: GP was expressing worry that she can't use HotelTonight anymore because of not wanting to support AirBnb. Glad nobody needs to read that anymore...?
- csallen 8y agoPost I saw from GP didn't give any reasoning whatsoever. Merely said, "I loathe Airbnb." Perhaps it was edited after I saw it and before you did?
- redunculous5 8y agoOh, was it you that flagged my comment? I wondered why. Your comment is disengenuous (actually a straight up lie). I did not edit the comment at any point. For ref, since it's been removed it said (if I remember) "I absolutley loathe Airbnb and will not make a booking with them. Does this mean I can no longer use HotelTonight too?" or something like that. I'm fairly new to posting on HN. Maybe the comment was a little political but it was merely expressing an opinion and a concern. Are those absolutely forbidden here? (This does not seem strange on HN, even looking through your comment history)
- dang 8y agocsallen didn't flag it, nor did the comment contain information beyond that you "loathe Airbnb" (as anyone can see who has showdead turned on in their profile). Would you please stop posting unsubstantive comments to HN? Especially please do not post to this site in the flamewar style.
- Joe-Z 8y agoSo, I turned on "showdead" (thanks for the hint btw!) and the original comment I see is closer to my description of it. I understand you calling it unsubstantive (so I guess I were right in that we're not allowed to post opinions here), but it did contain more information than that: Obviously there's people who liked to use HotelTonight, who don't want to give money to AirBnb. These people are now in a predicament and that's the other information he was communicating. Now, I don't want to disrespect the work you do here, but I don't see any reason why simple downvotes and a low ranking in the comments section wouldn't have sufficed for this comment. (From your reply though I gather this isn't the first time you interacted with this individual. So, do you think it's possible you'r not judging objectively here?)
- wenc 8y ago> I guess I were right in that we're not allowed to post opinions here I don’t think that’s true, but merely expressing an opinion without providing some form of justification or argument isn’t really something that is viewed favorably around here. I’m just a user on this site, but I tend to prefer to read comments that go beyond one liners in the vein of “something sucks”. To me this is a place to express thoughts that further the discussion, not to express one’s emotions necessarily. Just my two cents.
- dang 8y agoI gave that user two replies because they posted two comments which broke the site guidelines. I didn't realize they were by the same person. It's certainly possible to make the point that someone who likes HotelTonight might not like Airbnb. It just needs to be done without breaking the site guidelines. That's easy enough, so shouldn't be an issue. And it doesn't mean "we're not allowed to post opinions here". That's what people do all day on HN!
- Joe-Z 8y agoMaybe. I'm pretty sure I remember the "can't use HotelTonight anymore"-bit. Well, too bad we deleted this information because someone was uncomfortable with someone else's opinion...
- redunculous5 8y agoApparently dang doesn't like my comment and thinks its 'unsubstantive' but doesn't say why and keeps flagging my replies. I guess a negative opinion of Airbnb doesn't fly here. No doubt this will be flagged too.
- dang 8y agoWould you please stop posting trollish comments? It's not what this site is for, and if you keep doing it we will ban you. People criticize Airbnb here all the time. Anyone can eyeball https://hn.algolia.com/?query=airbnb&sort=byDate&dateRange=all&type=comment&storyText=false&prefix=false&page=0 https://hn.algolia.com/?query=airbnb&sort=byDate&dateRange=a... to see that it's not an issue. In case anyone cares, liking has nothing to do with this. I dislike many perfectly fine-for-HN comments, and like many of the ones we moderate. For example, I like internet rants, at least the well-crafted ones. They lessen the monotony of reading crud all day. But it doesn't mean we won't ban you for it. Despite the complete conviction of every troll in the neighborhood, the rules here are relatively objective.
- justrudd 8y agoA Planet Money episode about AirBnB in New Orleans. TL;DR - good in the beginning when it was residents renting out rooms. Eventually developers and companies bought up vast amounts of housing in iconic neighborhoods, priced out residents, and "destroyed the soul of the neighborhood". New Orleans now doesn't allow AirBnB unless you are physically in the house with the renter. https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2019/02/28/698763891/episode-897-new-orleans-vs-airbnb https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2019/02/28/698763891/epis...
