Spotlight doesn't work great for me. I have a large number of e-books and documents in my home directory and Spotlight is likely to return the most recently added books even if they are completely irrelevant to the search terms. Results are a little better, sometimes, if I search specifically in a given folder and especially if the terms are in the filename. But it really should work globally.
