Buying with friends is a good way to end up with a lot of problems.
Are you absolutely sure that you really want to spend every day living with your college buddies for the 30 years of a mortgage, covering them when they are short, either living with their filth or cleaning up after them, as well as dealing with all the long term house guests and pets they bring in?
The court cases resolving these sorts of breakups make bitter divorces look like a walk in the park.
But they are not quite as bad as when two business partners who started a business without an ironclad contract have a break up.
Having fun with someone once a week to watch sports on TV on weekends, playing beach sports, hiking and camping, hanging out in pubs, etc, doesn't mean you're compatible enough to have fun living with them every single day in a small space for several decades.
Notable exception is long term unmarried best friends who are basically married to each other but it's platonic. These relationships are fairly rare.
Pushing friend mortgages to the general public as a solution to unaffordable housing is a good strategy for mortgage brokers and real estate agents who work in those markets. They don't have to deal with the fall out of the break up so it's only upside from their point of view.
