In Hawaii, where housing is physically limited and prices are insane (maybe not like SF but still), a lot of families live with 2 or 3 generations in the same house. It's perfectly normal there, for example, for kids to live with their parents until their late 20's in order to save money, and some live with their parents until they pass away and then they inherit the home and live in it as their own. It's a much more diverse place than the US mainland, and it has a heavy dose of several Asian and other cultures which make it this way (Hawaii is kind of a "stew" rather than a "melting pot" like the mainland).
