Don't rush through tasks, use them as an exercise to learn new things. When I was starting out, I deliberately took the time to truly master as many of the UNIX tools as I could. When I would run into a problem like this, I would use it as an exercise to get better at them. In most cases, especially the first time I used each tool, it took much longer, but it paid off in the long run.
