One of my more enjoyable side projects was improving parsing of some truly horrendous log files - massive and poorly formatted - from ~2 hours to ~2 minutes. The code I was given was several hundred lines of python. All I did was replace all but the final parsing function with a single "grep | sed | awk | grep | uniq | sort | grep" line and called it a day. I'm sure I could have taken it farther, but for the amount of effort it was a fun little exercise.
