I have a Pi-hole running on a Raspberry Pi Zero. The Pi is connected to my home router using the USB Ethernet gadget features. The home router handles local DNS requests from those forwarded by Pi-hole, but the rest of my DNS just flows through the Pi. It's pretty nice. Never had an issue with the router's DNS, but OpenWRT also doesn't have the ease of Pi-hole.
