I actually know a Facebook moderator who lives in Austin. I found it very interesting that they do a lot of moderating of illegal political content in countries that have strict rules about it. She works directly for Facebook and gets the same perks as the other employees in ATX.
- duxup 8y agoWorking direct is always nice. I'm guessing the complexity of dealing with political stuff very much requires a different kind of moderator than say just gore.
- cvwright 8y agoWhoa. Are you implying that Facebook employees in Austin are helping, say, the Chinese government censor pro-democracy groups? I'm not sure the employee's perks (or lack thereof) are the biggest story there.
- duxup 8y agoCould be more benign such as a country that has rules about no political adds between X and Y times. Still your question is valid.
- dfabulich 8y agoFacebook is banned in China.
- tjkrusinski 8y agoThat was such a specific jump to an outlandish conclusion, no?
- tomhoward 8y agoMost countries have laws about what is legal/illegal to be published online, including those regarded as the most free/democratic. Facebook is just doing what they have to do to avoid falling foul of those laws. As someone else said, Facebook is blocked in China so it's not really about China at all.
