- telesilla 8y agoYes, I asked my science teacher this exact question when I was 15 (as I burn easily) and was happily told I couldn't get sunburnt behind glass. So far, experiments have proven this true.
- TeMPOraL 8y agoA similar fact is that photochromic lenses will not work in cars, i.e. when you're looking at the world through the windshield. The photochemistry in them is triggered by UV rays. It's another thing that should be common knowledge, but isn't.
- iguy 8y agoI don't know if this counts, but there's picture of a truck driver which was doing the rounds: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMicm1104059 https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMicm1104059
- fauigerzigerk 8y agoUnfortunately UVA contributes to skin cancer as well: https://www.skincancer.org/prevention/uva-and-uvb https://www.skincancer.org/prevention/uva-and-uvb
- chooseaname 8y agoAuto glass must be somehow different, because in Florida, you can surely get "some color" on your skin on a long drive and the sun beating in through the window.
- javagram 8y agoCar windshields block UVA (because of their reinforcement materials to prevent dangerous shattering in an accident) but many side windows don’t. Not sure if UVA could cause the “color” you describe. Supposedly only UVB causes tanning and sunburn. Might also just be a reaction to the heat?
- dawidw 8y agoMaybe it's due to heat made by Sun?
- chooseaname 8y agoNo. Definitely pink from slight burn. Google says some side windows aren't the same as the front and back.
- SmellyGeekBoy 8y agoI was told that TV would turn my eyes square as a child, looking forward to having it proved by science so I can smugly announce that I've known all along. Wait, no, it doesn't work like that.
- interfixus 8y agoNo it doesn't. Therefore the quotes around 'known'. Let us split the smugness down the middle.
