Everyone for some reason expects that GNU/Linux should work on every hardware configuration. I don't understand that, honestly. Why is there no such requirement for MacOS? Why do Windows-certified hardware have to work flawlessly with GNU/Linux? Just buy a Desktop/Laptop certified for GNU/Linux and stop complaining.
- killjoywashere 8y agoApple invalidates their own hardware, usually about 7-8 years after production. I’m sure Microsoft will too.
- fghtr 8y agoDoes it mean that the developers of GNU/Linux must provide compatiblity with every piece of hardware in the world?
- killjoywashere 8y agoQuite the opposite. I'd call that solid evidence that they don't owe the market infinite backward compatibility. Nevertheless, those of lesser means will always seek out low-cost solutions like installing Ubuntu on a 10 year old laptop and they will be predictably frustrated when things don't work. When an incidental fraction of your audience is "all the world's poor and downtrodden", you're going to get a lot of people looking for solutions. To some extent that works in your favor: from those poor and downtrodden will very likely emerge some brilliant hackers and technical leaders.
- Krasnol 8y ago> Why is there no such requirement for MacOS? Probably because nobody expects much from MacOS anyway? One relevant part of the Apple world is, that it works within it's narrow world of Hard- and Software. This is how they sell it. There is much much more Win-certified hardware out there. Much of it isn't used (for Win) anymore and therefore cheap as hell for excample. This is the hardware you'd expect your software to work with. This is where it's worth to invest time in.
- AsyncAwait 8y ago> Probably because nobody expects much from MacOS anyway? Given how most people complaining about Linux hold macOS as the desktop, I'd say OP's complain is extremely valid.
- neuronic 8y ago> One relevant part of the Apple world is, that it works You already figured out, why people enjoy using Macs. It works and I don't need to cycle through three different system compositions before graphics, audio and WiFi work.
- Krasnol 8y agoI'm not sure if I misunderstood OPs comment or if your comment is in no way related to the topic. But yeah, thanks for the ad. I guess... ;)
