I find it amusing, how Hollywood movies concentrate on factor "external shocks" (alien invasion, diseases,...), ignoring the other factors. Usually in the movies, the problem(s) then gets fixed with the use of nuclear weapons, technology or other science fiction magic. This reenforces the narrative of "even if shit hits the fan, we can still fix this eventually". It neglects carelessly the real dangers of climate change, complexity, environmental degradation and the history of human failure, as described in the article.
- jplayer01 8y agoWe need more disaster movies where we just lose. Ecological collapse, climate change, mass migration, drought and famine, etc.

That scenario seems to be going on with global warming. It's not entirely fair to "blame capitalism" because even if society was organized in a different way people would still be resistant to sacrifice. (e.g. the "yellow jackets" are a mass movement that hates to pay fuel taxes) That said, right-wing groups seem to pump an unlimited amount of money into the cause of making society ungovernable. For instance, the "society for Austrian economics" recently posted an article about how Thomas Aquinas wouldn't approve of welfare states. Well, if we brought Thom back to life I wonder how he would approve of the U.S. Healthcare system, Davos, Fox News, etc.
