I feel like "the human race will literally be wiped out if we don't all pitch in" is a perfect example of a legitimate reason for the draft. If you benefit from a society, then you have a certain degree of responsibility to that society. I personally don't think the draft is defensible for anything less than an existential threat to the nation, but the popular notion that the government shouldn't be able to make you do anything you don't want to is silly.
