- StavrosK 8y agoI think this is a quintessentially American slash Protestant-work-ethicy sentence. Why is anyone surprised that people who work so much that they don't have a life, meaningful relationships to other people or a vibrant social circle are depressed? If you optimize for making lots of money, that's (hopefully? probably?) what you will achieve. But it's very misguided to think that having a lot of money is how you become happy. If you want to be happy, make time for your friends, family, people important to you, and spend time on yourself and what you like doing. It's not complicated.
- randomacct3847 8y agoThe thing is I don’t think a lot of these people actually work that much. If you’re in a mid level engineering role at a FAANG you’re not usually working 50-60+ hour weeks. You’re actually probably underutilized and working on uninteresting tasks.
- cat199 8y ago> But it's very misguided to think that having a lot of money is how you become happy. still applies
- C1sc0cat 8y agoOr stress at work maybe thats a big cause of depression
- cat199 8y ago... pay no attention to the post-enlightenment free-market liberal materialist bias behind the curtain
- JohnFen 8y agoMoney can't buy happiness. It can only rent it.
- flippyhead 8y agoI've always felt the key is to focus on how much you spend not on how much you make. I want to make a lot of money, but I'm always careful to never spend too much. It's consumption that ruins things.
- gearhart 8y agoAnnual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery.
- JohnFen 8y agoIn terms of accumulating wealth, this is spot on. A very wealthy man once told me his secret to getting wealthy. He said the key isn't how much money you're taking in, it's how much money you're keeping. He also gave me a pain-free method of accumulating money that I've followed my whole life. His point was that no matter how much or how little you are earning, you can do with 10% less without it dramatically affecting your lifestyle. So every time any money comes into your hands, immediately take 10% of it and stash it somewhere where you'll keep your grubby paws off of it.
- scarejunba 8y agoIt's Blind. 90% wankage and 10% community wankage.
- czbond 8y agoTC or GTFO. It's a joke..... That part of Blind is really self centered and annoying.
- badpun 8y agoThe kinds of jobs that pay so much tend to not be very satisfying and come with high levels of stress. It's no wonder that the end result is depression.
