This is reminiscent of the Frederick Forsythe short story "The Shepherd", in which a Vampire (early British jet bomber) suffers instrument failure flying westward to Canada on Christmas Eve. I highly recommend the audio of the classic reading by Alan Maitland of CBC's "As It Happens", available on their website. They rebroadcast it every December.
