- sctb 8y agoCould you please increase the substance of your posts? They've been a bit below the standard here. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- Bucephalus355 8y agoFor background my claim against Yahoo being not a respected place to work is echoed in a 2013 NY Times piece: >”Mar 5, 2013 · “In the tech world it was such a bummer to say you worked for Yahoo,” said a former senior employee” http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/03/06/technology/yahoos-in-office-policy-aims-to-bolster-morale.html http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/03/06/technology/yahoos-in-of... I understand though taking issue with The NY Times as a source though, they do have their issues, with the recent Jill Abramson plagiarism case being a good example.
- TomMarius 8y agoI'm completely out of the loop. Why?
- thenanyu 8y agoIt's a bit preposterous, no serious professional hold this kind of prejudiced view. Yahoo, McK, GS, FB, Uber, etc. might not hold the prestige it used to on your CV, but these things ebb and flow. Microsoft used to be "lame" but now it's cool again.
- doktrin 8y agoMoreover, even when Microsoft was "lame", its employees were still individually respected as being competent in their field (unless given a specific reason to think otherwise).
- TomMarius 8y agoYeah. Microsoft was seen as evil, not bad - "evil" is quite the opposite IMO. Anyone incompetent is not in the position to even become evil.
- oconnore 8y agoThe New York Times has been running a series of hit pieces on McKinsey over the last few months. see: https://www.nytimes.com/by/michael-forsythe#latest-panel https://www.nytimes.com/by/michael-forsythe#latest-panel

- duxup 8y agoI don't think that actually answers the question... or is really that accurate.
- leroy_masochist 8y agoLOL, were you saying the same thing about Goldman when the Abacus story came out? Ugly news reports about what senior partners at a highly selective professional services company did != meaningful career repercussions for its alumni, most of whom were there as junior grinders rather than decision makers. I'm not a McK alum but would definitely still recommend a talented young person with a job offer there to take it.

- duxup 8y agoYahoo? I get that it wasn't run well but that doesn't really mean the folks working there aren't good at what they do / didn't do interesting things.
