We are in a dismal state of medicine on many chronic illnesses, such as the emerging study of Mast Cell disorders which could be affecting upwards of 10% of people but aren't understood by most doctors and is rarely diagnosed (in fact diagnostic criteria for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome aren't even agreed upon yet).
Even to get to the point of treatment you have to be extremely scrappy, spend endless hours on research, have a lot of money available for non-insurance-covered doctors, and still expect to be treated like you are a hypochondriac.
