Not sure if you have experience doing software consulting or not, but you describe exactly what forces freelancers to negotiate their rates down and burn out, vs successful consultants who charge much more, work on much more valuable projects with better paying clients. I won't repeat what patio11 and others always say here, but if you are a freelancer and charge hourly, I would encourage you try and follow their advice and see how it goes. I have, and it's been wonderfully successful!
