I've been to the edge and back. It never occurred to me to call a hotline and it never would, but I have no doubt that other people might benefit from it. If the prospect of saving a life isn't enough to get past some abstract hand-wringing then I don't know what is. The point of the hotline isn't to fix you or permanently stave off a desire to kill yourself. The point is to buy enough time for you to get real help.

- staticautomatic 8y agoIt's an absolute shame that you were involuntarily committed only to not get any help while you were in hospital, but are you taking the position that the hotline people shouldn't call the police if they think you're hanging up in order to kill yourself?
- chris_wot 8y agoIf they say it is a confidential service and you literally do not give your name, and mask your phone number - then yes.
- justtopost 8y agoHaving someone who will listen without the threat of loss of freedom or involuntary death is no small comfort.
