If the dealer saw something come up, he'd contact him and say "Hey I think I can get X car for $Y. Want me to pull the trigger?". The other way was when the local Ferrari dealership was getting a new, hard to get model, they'd contact him since he was a preferred buyer and he'd get first right of refusal basically. That's how he got his LaFerrari. You can't just walk off the street and buy some cars.
