Perhaps Gimli is talking to himself reassuringly before battle I kid, but the human mind has this extreme capacity for filling in the blanks and re-adjusting plain contradictions into something coherent. It's a little bit how I'm able to imagine these epic stories from Dwarf Fortress' Legends mode (unfortunately can't provide any relevant links right now).
