Trump to sign border deal, declare national emergency
- mimixco 8y agoAnyone with an understanding of basic economics can see that immigration is absolutely a national emergency in our country. When we allow people to come to the US who will work under third-world conditions (unsafe environments; low pay; no healthcare; etc.), we lower the standard of living for everyone in our country. People are quick to say, "Well, no Americans will do those jobs!" And, of course, they should not! Americans should not be willing to work under unsafe conditions without sufficient pay or benefits. This is the meaning of a standard of living! Immigration controls having nothing to do with race. I'm a European American and I could not work in France or another EU country if I made my best efforts to do. It's not because of my race. (My last name is French!) It's because France is not willing to lower the standard of living of its citizens in order to take on people who might be willing to put up with less. By eliminating illegal immigration, we force employers in the US to offer jobs with the right pay and benefits that Americans deserve to maintain our high standard of living. A vote for immigration controls is a vote for preserving the American way of life.
- mimixco 8y agoThanks to whoever downvoted this without actually writing a reply. It's because you're probably a socialist and don't have any reply to the real facts I'm talking about.
- tomhoward 8y agoYour opener: "Anyone with an understanding of basic economics can see" puts you at a disadvantage, as you insult anyone who doesn't already agree with you and surrender your ability to persuade them.
- krapp 8y agoBut we have immigration laws, and immigration controls, and Trump is finally signing on to funding them. The rate of illegal immigration into the US has been falling, not rising, and a lot of the undermining of the market you're describing is due to the exploitation of legal immigrants, not illegal. If you want to do something sensible about immigration, focus on reforming the H1B program and improving the standard of living for all Americans and not on this hyperbole and nonsense about a wall and a national emergency that doesn't exist.
