I've heard programmers described as plumbers. I've heard orthopedic surgeons described as body mechanics. There is a certain type of person who considers any endeavour that is tactile, applied, or practical to be "blue collar". When I encounter such people I can't help but wish I were rather in the company of a plumber or a mechanic.
