I would say the same about bash.
- diggan 8y agoWith enough bias, you can say the same about anything :)
- bordercases 8y agoYou could also say that about bias.
- pupdogg 8y agoI haven't chuckled the same way in a while until reading your comment. Thank you for making my day!
- emilsedgh 8y agoProducts in production environments aren't relying on Bash that much anymore. Nowhere near how they depend on SQL databases.
- whynotminot 8y agoI've never worked on a product of any kind where I didn't have to have solid command line knowledge to truly trouble shoot an issue. Especially in production, and especially if you don't necessarily have perfect control over the environments you're deploying to.
- ehnto 8y agoI have never seen a production environment not use bash for part of the deploy process, if not all of it. I have seen a lot of prod environments.
- opportune 8y agoThis does not at all echo my experience
- all2 8y agoOoh, I have some resources for bash that I keep coming back to. - https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bash.pdf https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bash.pdf - https://devhints.io/bash https://devhints.io/bash - https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bashref.html https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bashref.html
- tingletech 8y agothis is my goto bash source https://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/ https://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/
- wvenable 8y agoYou can be a good developer and not know bash. Bash is, in some ways, programming horror. But SQL is pretty fundamental. It's a thing onto itself. There are plenty of shells and shell-like languages but there is really only one SQL.
- james_s_tayler 8y agowrt to shells - the combination of find/grep/sed/awk for locating and transforming textual data makes for its own kind of extremely powerful query language. I've always valued being able to think in pipelines made up of these tools.
- wilsonnb3 8y agoAs someone currently employed as a .net developer, I’m not sure I would say the same.
