GRB or Asteroid are also ELE that the GP did not mention.
- shabble 8y agoHow useful is a mars colony/parallel civ against an incoming GRB though? My vague understanding is that they're potentially quite 'tightly collimated' in astronomical terms, but that would still potentially cover a good volume of the solar system if one came our way. That is, if we assume a GRB intersects Earth, what is the probability that it won't also hit Mars? Very Big Asteroids are definitely one event it would serve us well for though.
- aaronblohowiak 8y agoOooh I would love to learn more about the grb stats
- lisper 8y agoWikipedia is usually a good place to start. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_burst#Energetics_and_beaming https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_burst#Energetics_and...
- lisper 8y agoIt is much easier and cheaper to detect and deflect big asteroids than to colonize Mars. See e.g. https://b612foundation.org/ https://b612foundation.org/
