It's funny that you say you think recommendation systems cause a monoculture of content. I actually think that recommenders have lead to less of a monoculture then ever seen before. It used to be that everyone in a geographic region would read the same newspapers, watch the same news stations, and listen to the same radio stations. Causing people to mostly be exposed to all the same content. However, now with recommendation algorithms everyone gets exposed to a totally different news diet.
