“If you can”... I’ve never quite figured this out. Is this something the company has to offer or can anyone do it with the financial means and acccess to a good tax lawyer / accountant?
- romanhn 8y agoEarly exercise is a benefit provided by the company at the time of the option grant. Same company may choose to make the benefit available for some grants and not others (some reasons why they might not are listed here: http://www.startupcompanylawyer.com/2009/01/11/should-a-company-allow-early-exercise-of-stock-options/ http://www.startupcompanylawyer.com/2009/01/11/should-a-comp...).
- sulam 8y agoYou mention financial means, but keep in mind that depending on the stage the company is at, "financial means" ratchets upwards. The last "real" pre-IPO company I joined would have required a ~$300K check from me to early exercise.
- toast0 8y agoYou don't necessarily need to early exercise all of your options.
