I think the wayland devs aren't focusing on replacing absolutely everybody's X-based workflows, but on providing a reasonably engineered component that integrators can build a desktop environment on top of. In practice, we'll probably get a distro shipping a self-contained DE with a centralised hotkey setup, and I expect that will do the job for the vast majority of users. Maybe someone else is building a phone OS and using wayland for the graphical bits and the hotkey thing isn't even going to be on their radar.
- alexandernst 8y agoBut why does every single DE has to reinvent the wheel with hotkeys? Why can't we have that provided by Wayland? (or maybe by libhotkey, if you wish). Why so much effort in replicating the same functionality over and over must be wasted in the entire linux ecosystem?
- veqz 8y agoNot ever single DE, but the Compositor a DE uses must have it implemented. Though Compositors may share libraries as well, and a unifying library might very well be developed for this.
