Ask HN: Prefer to pay a monthly fee, or deal with ads on your favorite sites?
After seeing some threads of people on HN talking about common "dark patterns" such as reddit making the mobile web app seem unusable to push users to the native app, I want to know what YOU personally would want.
All things constant, deeply think about your favorite websites(that have a decent sized staff, and non-negligible maintenance costs) and consider if you would rather pay a monthly fee, or deal with the negatives of ads(including these dark patterns, tracking, and selling data).
For the fee assume the fee would be a small number averaging ~ $1 per month per website you currently enjoy for free. Assume $1 would be what the website generates from ads and data in a month per user, so instead you can just pay them the revenue they would otherwise be receiving.
Note: Please do not turn the conversation in a philosophical debate about how the internet should be free, but focus on the fact that these larger sites have pretty large costs to stay in business.
