How does the K8s / Envoy / Istio stack compare to Nomad / Consul from Hashi?

  Consul is just Service discovery. Istio adds a service mesh in which you can introduce all sorts of routing like 1% traffic to a canary, dark deploy on another route, etc. also mTLS authentication and authorization. I think consul came out with Consul Connect to compete but I’m not too familiar with that. Also Istio just runs in your cluster effortlessly instead of needing some VMs for Consul.

  Once you install Istio, all your traffic goes through Envoy sidecar proxies automatically injected to your pods. Consul just provides service discovery (like DNS, which Kubernetes offers by default). By proxying traffic, Istio lets you program how your traffic works (traffic splitting, policies, monitoring, ...).

    Consul 1.2 supports service mesh deployments with a new feature called Consul Connect. It includes a sidecar proxy.
