That's probably only France, where cheese after meals is common.
While it's frequently used as a topping in Italian cousine, it's nearly exclusively eaten on top of slices of (dark) bread as a standalone dish in German cousine (though Germans eat a lot of Italian food).
The most American use of cheese (i.e. not Italian cousine related) is maybe the cheese flavored corn-snacks (e.g. cheetos).
- hinkley 8y agoI'll have to insist on nominating the grilled cheese sandwich. We are big on our comfort food. But I think we might have also inflicted 'cheese food' (cheese 'flavored', processed food) on the world and I do apologize for that.
- jeromegv 8y agoAdding Quebec to the list of places where cheese is eaten after meals.
- ascar 8y agoIsn't that probably a French tradition in Quebec, considering it's a French speaking province?
- zizee 8y agoIn Australia, cheese is also commonly eaten as a prelude to a meal, or as a snack (often with alcohol).
- freetime2 8y agoCheese is often consumed as "otsumami" (a snack meant to be paired with alchohol) in Japan. It is eaten standalone [1], mixed with fish [2], or as a flavor in junk food [3]. These products are incredibly common in Japan and can be found at any super market or convenience store in the country. Japan loves cheese too... just not as much as Europe or the US. - ascar 8y agoI'm not sure about your definition of often. I have not seen a Japanese eating cheese or even stopping at the small cheese collection in my local supermarket in the last four months I've been here. I think price above value is a somewhat good indicator how commonly used a product actually is. The Camembert you linked also costs between ¥400 and ¥600 in my local supermarket. That's a 5-8 times price increase to Camembert of the same or I think even larger size in German supermarkets. The price imho indicates this is a exotic rarely used speciality. Milk and Jogurth on the other hand have only a smaller 30-50% price increase to German supermarkets for the same quantity and quality. I also see Japanese frequently buying these.
- peteretep 8y ago> That's probably only France, where cheese after meals is common. Very common in the UK too
- maxerickson 8y agoMac & Cheese though.
- mrighele 8y agoWhile cheese is used also as topping in Italy (in particular Parmigiano cheese and the likes) I think it's main usage is after meals, at least in northern Italy (not sure about south). In fact we have a saying that goes like "The mouth is not tired [of eating] if it doesn't taste of milk", meaning that the ending act of a meal is eating some cheese.
- ascar 8y agoInteresting. Have been in Italy a bunch of times as it's fairly close from Bavaria, but didn't know that!
