Points taken. I should clarify that my experience is with French infantry, which I suspect accounts for the slight difference in vocabulary. Re "firing solution", I've heard it used both in artillery (i.e.: "solution to a parabolic equation") and in a more general context of "tactical solutions". The latter might be an informal term, in US parlance, though.
