"I believe the Common Travel Area is also a key issue as it commits us to open travel through the border which on the face of it seems incompatible with leaving the customs union."
No, this happens elsewhere already.
Compare Norway - it is in a common travel area with the EU (Schengen), but out of the EU customs union. They're different issues.
- theoh 8y agoNorway's membership of the EEA is a prerequisite for its Schengen membership.
- simonh 8y agoAnd the sort of trade deals brexiteers want to negotiate would be far beyond anything comparable to the few EEA exceptions on common tariffs, so it in no way an equitable comparison. For a start, EEA members contribute billions to the EU budget for the market access they get towards common institutions and programmes. The brexit camp want to end all payments to the EU, so a Norway style arrangement is, apparently, off the table.
- nmeofthestate 8y agoThe EEA includes Single Market membership (not 100% perhaps?) but not EU customs union membership.
