Say I'd like to review sockets: I'd probably first pull up Beej's Guide to Network Programming [1], and then switch over to (say) 'man 2 listen' when I want to dive in and see for myself that Beej's exposition is true on my system. :-) Then I'd dive in and try it out in code, referring back to the man pages as needed.
