More generally, I feel Google should wherever possible have an exit plan for any product they launch. Make sure the account/code systems etc can be separated if they wish. This big launch and plug pull are an ongoing problem and creating loss of trust and uptake. A good solution IMO would be to (wherever viable) let willing devs continue a product when Google decide they are out. Be it open source the project, or offer it to teams that worked on it if they want to continue it as a business under a new brand.
