We're in a kind of interesting economic situation when it comes to consumer compute and bandwidth resources. There's no "billing" for compute time on the server side nor on the client side. Bandwidth costs are also negligible on most connections. This means there are no pressures to efficiently utilize them beyond user annoyance (which usually isn't a strong enough motivating factor to modify behavior). Is the solution some sort of bidirectional billing scheme?
