I have this app installed on my phone and I have chosen to have it installed by choice. I am getting paid $20 amazon per month to have it installed.
Why do I do this? Because I enjoy making side hustle money with my phones. This research app in particular is very useful to me because it is 100% passive. If you are concerned with privacy you can always just use a crap side phone to run the app.
- zjs 8y agoCould you summarize what you believe you're giving up in exchange for $20/month? (There's a thread about informed consent elsewhere in this discussion. I'd like to understand how informed you are about the risks associated with the app and certificate.)
- blub 8y agoIf you sell one of your kidneys, you could buy even more phones and increase your profits while at the same time screwing over Facebook by giving them mostly useless data. Just make sure you don't post your plan on HN from the phones, they are intercepting all internet communication after all.
- dx034 8y agoSelling a kidney is NOT the same as telling companies about your behavior. Organ transplants are extremely risky and should only be done if there's no other alternative. The risk of death is very real in those cases. I don't think that's true when you install a Facebook VPN. Some people value their personal data more than others. That's why no one should be forced into giving up their data (essentially what GDPR is for). But if they want, they can of course set a price for their data.
- lostlogin 8y ago> 100% passive. Can you explain what you mean by this? I wouldn’t like it because I would consider it to be watching me, and I don’t think that’s passive.
