There's also the pkg directory (https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/tree/master/pkg https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/tree/master/pkg) which incorporates a bunch of third-party libraries and projects without a significant amount of code changes (see the patches/ directory in each pkg). Maybe this gives a good impression of what it takes to port things to RIOT.
