Show HN: Open startups with their revenue, metrics, and stories
- Malfunction92 8y agoWow I did not expect this to blow up so fast! I'm sure there's a bunch I missed, so if you have any please let me know and I'll add them in.
- giancarlostoro 8y agoDo you have number of employees for any of those startups? That's also fascinating, especially for the really small shops.
- Malfunction92 8y agoNever thought of that honestly. Most of these companies have information about their employees, so maybe I can add them.
- samstave 8y agoIf you link to the corporate linkedin profile, it can tell you how many employees self-identify with each via linkedin profiles.
- vladsanchez 8y agoFeature request: Filter by Cost
- yRetsyM 8y agoGitlab seems to be fairly open with their bits https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/ https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/
- cenal 8y agoIf you want to read content and engage in conversation with folks who boot strap this is a site I found on hacker news a while back that’s been good: https://barnacl.es https://barnacl.es
- Scullwm 8y agoSimilar to this, I was looking for some inspiration about a landing page, I've found the top 1000 SaaS (https://saas1000.com/ https://saas1000.com/) with some data about them: Location, employees, 6 month growth and if they have some investisors.
- cromantin 8y agoIs there burn rate for any of them?
- nathanbarry 8y agoA burn rate assumes a negative number. At ConvertKit we operate with about 18% profit margins.
- cromantin 8y agoWow! 18% is a lot. You are good.
- Malfunction92 8y agoThat data would be interesting, but it's not something I found while compiling this list.
- Shpigford 8y agoWe (Baremetrics) operate basically breakeven. Spending 2019 growing profit + cash in the bank.
- avip 8y agoI have little interest in the content, but kudus to the creator for a very well designed site.
- mcliam 8y agoWhy bother with the preamble?
- PacifyFish 8y agoLove this site! Did you use a front end framework/template to design it? It’s so slick.
- Malfunction92 8y agoThanks! Tried to keep it as clean as possible, which turned out good I guess. It's plain bootstrap for the front end, built and served by a SSR Nuxt application.
- avip 8y ago(Obviously not OP) it's vue.js with bootstrap.
- jchallis 8y agoIf good design makes one want to lick a site, this is very lickable.
- Malfunction92 8y agoAs a developer who really struggles with design, this is the last thing I expected to hear from this. Thanks a lot!
- waterside81 8y agoYou're being hard on yourself - the site is perfect. Easy to read, clear & concise. Good job.
- projectramo 8y agoAdditional interesting info that would be interesting: 1. Headcount history -- When they added roles -- What the roles were 2. Cost structure history edit: clarify
- godelmachine 8y agoThe amount written at the bottom of every startup is how much they earn/ month?
- Malfunction92 8y agoYup, monthly revenue. Of course these aren't in real time but are the most recent data I could find online.
- godelmachine 8y agoThat’s great to know! Surprised that IndieHackers rolls in less dough.
- ChanningAllen 8y agoWe actually roll in 0 dough as of 2017! https://www.indiehackers.com/blog/acquired-by-stripe https://www.indiehackers.com/blog/acquired-by-stripe
- Malfunction92 8y agoYeah was on the edge thinking whether to include it or not, but pre-acquisition Courtland posted some really useful stuff about how he grew it. Felt it was a shame not to include, especially since it's very helpful.
- dydx 8y agoCandy Japan at the bottom shows $1.1k/mo, but the first link shows $8,200 revenue/month.
- Malfunction92 8y agoApparently the $1.1k figure is the latest? Unless that figure is profit, not just revenue.
- shubhamjain 8y agoFunny thing is I have known about some of these companies since about a few years. I distinctly remember seeing Ghost's revenue (around $40K) and thinking, "umm.. that doesn't seem much to go around five people."; watching Hubstaff numbers (which was ~$80K/month, I believe), and saying to myself, "that's a very niche software. Would it ever go to make revenue that justifies expenses of a team?" (I think the CEO mentioned that he had taken zero salary since starting the company) I am amazed how far they have come. So, a lesson learned well: If you're starting a company, you're fighting a long, hard battle against pessimists like me.
- johnonolan 8y agoCan confirm
- ttul 8y agoIn SaaS, the road can be especially long... Bootstrapped SaaS north of $1M a month is damn impressive.
- brobdingnagians 8y agoI'm curious how it breaks out to lower tiers. How impressive is $20,000/month, $100,000/month etc. and what percentage of SaaS get there, how long it takes, etc. Is there anywhere that has a nice table of that data for tech SaaS? That's the kind of info that would be quite fun and informative to look at.
- WA 8y agoDoes it really matter? There are a thousand reasons why businesses fail. Also, $20,000/month can be quite impressive, if you earn this for yourself and live somewhere with low costs of living. Seeing those numbers is just entertainment. If you hit your number, you figure that it doesn’t matter if it’s impressive for others.
- puranjay 8y agoMy side project just broke $1k/month and I already count that as a success. My success metric is "freedom". If this side project could net me $3k/month, it would net me a lot of "freedom points" I reckon everyone has a different metric for success
- sahillavingia 8y agoAdd Gumroad? It started out as a Show HN weekend project and I release the numbers every month: https://mobile.twitter.com/shl/status/1083805607201669120 https://mobile.twitter.com/shl/status/1083805607201669120 Gumroad in December: Volume processed: $5.4M (down 4%) Revenue: $341K (down 3%) Gross profit: $135K (up 9%)
- Malfunction92 8y agoBeen following Gumroad for a while! Would love to add it but I don't recall seeing anything like interviews or "making of" posts anywhere – I tried to add a little more than revenue numbers here.
- sahillavingia 8y agoFair enough. I'm happy to, but I haven't been asked! I'm on a bunch of podcasts but they're less structured and often not transcribed. The monthly numbers tweet often turns into a psuedo-AMA of sorts. It's a distributed interview :) But if anyone, from Indie Hackers or otherwise, is reading...
- elomarns 8y agoYou can apply for an interview on Indie Hackers: https://www.indiehackers.com/contribute#submit https://www.indiehackers.com/contribute#submit.
- kamarg 8y agoThis is a bit off topic of the main post but do you plan to add Twitter login to the Android app? I can't use it to access the books I've purchased because I logged in to the website with my Twitter account when I made the purchases but can't do so on my phone.
- sahillavingia 8y agoYes, we're working on updating the iOS app as we speak and will move onto the Android app after that. First half of this year.
- lexda15 8y agoLooks interesting! I see Buffer in the list with 100+ Companies with Remote Open Positions and I guess that important to see real information about a company that you'd like to be hired. When you see Key Metrics of a company, you know how you can grow there and help it to be better. PS Just for info. I found it here. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sr0vy3eDn2fcEhxOdkPv0BjsWBR7JntDJqRM6_hyjbE/edit?usp=sharing https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sr0vy3eDn2fcEhxOdkPv...
- samstave 8y agoGreat doc - thanks
- cdiamand 8y agoJust a heads up - there is an issue with the carrd.co link. Otherwise, site looks great. Looking forward to seeing more!
- Malfunction92 8y agoGood catch, fixed!
- alexxtomsk 8y agoI made a similar open startup list with stories, links and other insights a while ago. I think you will find more startups to pick from that post: https://standuply.com/blog/saas-startups-reveal-their-journeys/ https://standuply.com/blog/saas-startups-reveal-their-journe...

- ackfoo 8y agoWow, what a wasteland of garbage. Hard to believe that any of these are getting investment or making money—-none of them produces anything remotely of value to the human condition. Where are the startups making actual valuable innovative products and solving real problems?
- agxp 8y agoIf you’re ever interested in real garbage look at how much some “creators” make on patreon for absolutely stupid things.
- samstave 8y agoExamples?
- loceng 8y agoAnd what project(s) are you working on?
- sctb 8y agoPlease just post substantively. You've been breaking the guidelines a whole lot and eventually we ban accounts for that. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- samstave 8y agoThis guy is an asshole, +1 on banning him.
- ezekg 8y agoI'm like 99% sure that Carrd makes more than $4k/mo [0]. Those numbers in that tweet would put him at around $12k/mo. I could be wrong though. [0]: https://twitter.com/ajlkn/status/1080163380990746626 https://twitter.com/ajlkn/status/1080163380990746626
- Malfunction92 8y agoI pulled that number from an older post. Updated!
- martin-adams 8y agoJust remember, $12K a month means zero growth in 2018. So it is probably higher. I totally get that you don't know what that figure is instead though.
- indemnity 8y agoHow do you figure that? He doubled revenue from 2017, or am I missing something?
- factsaresacred 8y agoThe rise of Carrd has been impressive to watch. Zero marketing afaik. Just simplicity combined with a constantly improving product. A quote from Joel Spolsky springs to mind: “Every day that we spent not improving our products was a wasted day.”
- countryqt30 8y agoHottest startup in Germany: https://www.alleaktien.de https://www.alleaktien.de
- helloclouders 8y agoGood
- tripnine 8y agoThis is great. I love transparency. Every company on this list just gained a little bit most trust in my book. Thanks for putting this together!
- tych0 8y agoLooks like you can add farmbot to that list: https://meta.farm.bot/docs https://meta.farm.bot/docs
- FahadUddin92 8y agoIndiehackers.com does this.
- wuliwong 8y ago>Indiehackers.com does this. ya. https://www.indiehackers.com/products https://www.indiehackers.com/products
- blairanderson 8y agothe frontpage of HN can be all the `funding` you need: https://simpleanalytics.io/simpleanalytics.io?start=2018-01-01&end=2019-01-01 https://simpleanalytics.io/simpleanalytics.io?start=2018-01-...
- eruci 8y agoI made an open revenue page for https://geocode.xyz/open https://geocode.xyz/open It is hard to keep it up to date when there are 4 different revenue sources, but it is a good signal to send to customer s saying "hey, we are growing, so you can be more confident working with a company that's going to be still around down the road."
- BartBoch 8y agoYeah, a part of "open" community is to provide MRR, or at least Annual revenue, so potential makers can have an insight on how business in a given niche performs.
- fredb19 8y agoThis is awesome! Very very small thing: it would be good if the icon based buttons had a `title` attribute so that what they represent is clearer.
- tomerbd 8y agoCould you please share how you approached the UI creation as it's beautiful
