Wow, this problem is exactly what my startup is trying to solve. (Not sure if I'm allowed link to it here.) A huge issue here is that there's no way to pay tiny amounts for one-off content. Like, it's impossible to charge 10¢ to your credit card. So publishers resort to ads or subscriptions or obnoxious bundling schemes to get over the fee thresholds for credit cards.
