Yes you are right that BPMN is primarily designed for business processes that involve human interaction (and please excuse that a bit flamboyant title). The gray area is I guess what describing automated workflows- there you can go either with bpmn or uml activity diagram. And that is what the post is exploring: how/whether we can simplify those when dealing with large workflow graphs where both of these options might be too verbose to use.
