Not exactly a garden-path sentence, but I had a few branch mispredictions on my way through this sentence.
- chmod775 8y agoThat is what makes it fun to read, is it not? The sentence stood out to me as well, but because I liked it.
- idbehold 8y agoAre exclamation points are no longer sentence-ending punctuation?
- ken 8y agoNot since Tom Wolfe, at least.
- Qwertystop 8y agoReally? After "store" the path seemed pretty direct to me - "a huge hundreds-of-years-old oil painting will definitely help a store stand out".
- theoh 8y agoHere's a re-punctuation that fixes the "etail, a cultural treasure" problem, which is arguably worse than the exclamation marks. > In the arms race for the most UNIQUE, most AUTHENTIC store currently underway — when only-in-person experience is what differentiates retail from e-tail — a cultural treasure surrounded by a puzzle straight out of a Dan Brown novel may be the ultimate accessory.
- yesenadam 8y agoWhat problem?! It's a fine sentence. Your 'fixes' make it far worse, seems to me. They're a perfectly-used pair of commas.
- theoh 8y agoI was drawing attention to a possible "branch prediction error" subsequent to the word "store". I don't have any problem with the sentence in its context, I'm just trying to respond to the viewpoints expressed other comments in this thread. In particular, the comment I replied to made a claim that I thought I was meaningfully responding to.
