Of course ML algorithms can be biased; rather than engaging an Internet layperson who tried to contradict AOC with a silly argument, it would be more interesting if the article engaged the more salient counterpoint to claims like these--attempts to eliminate bias can introduce bias as well.
Anyway, the article is not written in good faith; it's only a step above "BOOM AOC owns Internet conservatives!". There's an interesting conversation in here somewhere, but this article seems designed to avoid it.
- porphyrogene 8y agoThe article has an appropriate amount of technical and political discussion. The words “she is right” are simply not in this community’s vocabulary.
- shadowbained 8y agoWhat sort of critique are you trying to make of "this community?" Are the words "he is right" in our vocabulary?

- dvtrn 8y agoAre people really making new accounts on the spot here to comment in these kinds of threads to avoid having disagreeable ideas traced back to their main accounts?
- arcaster 8y agoI agree this is a double standard - maybe we as educated people in this forum can move past arguing gender semantics in 2019? Can't wait for someone to try and guess my gender through HN... Maybe we should add a HN eula that states users must assume all other users are of a non-binary gender identity...
- arcaster 8y agoCan HN please add a "GMG" or "GMSO" category? I'll leave it to other HN users to decipher what that acronym might stand for...
- weberc2 8y agoThe article portrays the issue "whether or not ML models can be racially biased" as inherently conservative based on a sample of 1. This isn't even a very interesting question to the HN community, since we largely know that this is a resolved issue; the more interesting conversation would be about what we should do about it (as opposed to whether or not a particular tribe was wrong about an issue, which is what the article was designed to incite, by all appearances).
- dbt00 8y agoML models are created and driven by human intervention. Humans are biased (in various directions). All models are biased in one way or another. Now, you say this article should engage this counterpoint, but you haven't actually made a point. You've simply narrowly constructed "all models contain bias" to view only attempts to balance known bias with skepticism. You also fail to take a position on what we should do about this -- we're forced as readers to assume your conclusion is that counter-bias programming is bad and the status quo is good. That is wrong, but you don't actually say it so now that I've said it out loud you can complain that you're misunderstood or I'm making false assumptions about you, then continue to argue without ever stating your thesis about what should be done. What's your belief? What's your suggested course of action? Take a stand for what you really believe.
- weberc2 8y agoWhy do you think I need to have a solution to the problem in order to call out a bad faith article? How do you get from "weberc2 doesn't have a solution" to "readers are forced to believe weberc2 favors the status quo"? Does AOC need to have a solution in order to call out the status quo? If so, what is her position? I didn't see it in the article.
