Studies in the past have done the same experiments again after removing all the leaves etc. and get the same cleaning of the air. Turns out it was the microorganisms and absorption in the potting soil transforming and absorbing the noxious compounds. This one seems to have been done right but they used levels of contaminants much higher than would be found in a home.
