How many people get a visit or a text from Uber's CEO when there's an accident, when a disabled person is refused service because of their assistance dog, etc? Not many, because they're not journalists. If a company lays on everything they've got when they know the subject of an accident is a prominent journalist, but that person ends up thinking they should be doing more regardless... that makes it pretty clear these companies can do better.
