I think many of the professions you mentioned (medical doctors, researchers, professors, ...) are going to have people with the same mentally as software engineers where the workforce members want to make a lot of money using acquired skills then retire early. There's nothing new with people wanting to make a lot of money while working in order to have a lifestyle of not working. Likewise, there are software engineers, doctors, researchers, etc. that are more passionate about the work they do than getting to a retirement lifestyle. People find different things to obsess over.
