Another spoiler: Gates uses his philanthropy efforts as a backdoor mechanism for pushing special interests, some of which he owns personal stakes in, into new African markets. GMO crops and insecticides are pushed onto poor farmers and communities under the guise of keeping down mosquito populations, and western companies profit.
- mryall 8y agoIf mosquito populations are kept down, and African people benefit from decreased disease and famine, might it not be worth it? You seem to imply that there's something intrinsically bad in GMO crops, insecticides or making a profit. Technology and trade sounds like overall it is helping, based on the global health statistics I see.
- cat199 8y agoyou seem to imply that these are the only means to reduce disease and famine..
- crisdux 8y agoYes because famine and disease is much better. We should stop all progress because some people are making money.
- cat199 8y agothis presumes gmo crops and high medicinal costs are required for these efforts. call me back when pharma companies don't use geographical price discrimination when they can get away with it, and when 'developed' countries aren't throwing away agricultural output on subsidies..
- hannasanarion 8y agoHow dare he supply farmers with nutritious high-yield seed. Real men farm with wheat cultivars from the stone age that look and taste like grass.
