As unorthodox as it is, the way I learned Git was through re-implementing it as a project for the data structures course I was taking [1]. This isn't the method I would entirely recommend to most people: instead, like the author, make a diagram for each of the (most-used/basic) commands and sketch out how they interact with the data structures.
