Police, Computing, and Nationalism – Kamau Bobb
- smileysteve 8y agoThis will seem tone deaf, but while the author tries to emphasize the fear he felt, this final story seems not very oppressive; and while he makes statements claiming a person of privilege would be treated better, I wonder how. The most fear invoking aspects: 1. Police have hand on holstered gun as they approach a deadly machine (car) and possibly armed unidentified person (I believe this is policy) 2. A "grisly" attitude in asking for ID before telling the reason for the stop. And being told to keep his hands still and visible after he had fumbled his wallet. 3. Waiting for backup - and backup securing the stop, but ultimately being the nice good cop. Here's why I don't believe he feared for his life 1. He stood up for his right to not offer ID. (this is inadvisable but legal) 2. He texted his wife despite the wallet debacle where the officer told him to keep his hands on the wheel. (this is questionably unlawful and disobeying an officer) 3. He was quickly free to go, though his vehicle would be impounded because an uninsured vehicle can't be driven. However, he decided to be frustrated with the officer and not grab his personal belongings. 4. Ultimately, he discusses with the officer that he is free to use a cell phone, talk to state farm, resolve the issue, and ultimately, trusts the officer with his cell phone. 5. By the end, he is asking if the ticket could be destroyed (despite now knowing he in fact broke the law) and discussing the officer with the backup he was afraid of. A good lawyer would tell him that he should have done the following: 1. Should have had bill of sale and insurance in a provisionally tagged vehicle. 2. Should have cooperated with a driver's license, as he is driving a vehicle. Even though he doesn't legally have to. Unless this would incriminate him. 3. Shouldn't have said anything. Take the ticket. Should have let them impound the car, take his personal belongings if he isn't being detained. 4. Go home. contact lawyer, let lawyer find out why insurance wasn't paid, and count the $300 of impound fee and ticket up to an accident.
- smileysteve 8y agoI would love if the downvoter had a conversation about this though; It's not my place to say whether a person had fear or not, but I feel this was written about and posted for reasons that make and expand that fear; in a fearmongering way.
