I just assume that there will be camera constantly recording when I stay in airbnb, or anywhere really. They way I never have to worry about whether it exist or not. As recording technology becoming more and more advance, it's less and less reasonable to expect privacy. I rather adapt my life to fit this new culture.
- RankingMember 8y agoI think expecting privacy will always be the reasonable approach. Giving bad actors an out because "oh well the technology's so advanced now let's just accept it" is giving creeps a pass.
- matz1 8y agoI didn't say giving bad actor an out. Just because you have information doesn't mean you are allowed to use the information to harm me. Its still illegal to do so.
- alkonaut 8y agoI'd be hesitant to have surveillance equipment or anything that could be mistaken for surveillance equipment because a review that there is a camera in any of a landlord's properties would mean I'm not renting from them, ever. I really don't care whether they use whatever is recorded in a bad way or not.
- matz1 8y agoSure, its your choice.
- throw2016 8y agoThat's because you don't really care about privacy. If it were something else 'you cared about' you would be saying something completely different and wondering why others don't share your concern. These things are generational and accumulated wisdom about privacy, surveillance and their cascading consequences into other aspects of society including sleepwalking into a police state are well known. For those on the other side of the police state or who gain from these shifts, and there are many apart from many who 'just accept', these are merely to be hand waved away, 'normalized' as 'inevitable', 'not such a bad thing' or 'accepted' with quiet resignation but perhaps those with a greater appreciation of history, evolution of human societies and the perpetual quest for freedom and democracy and what it entails can take a wider view.
- matz1 8y agoYou can choose to care about privacy, but then you have to accept that there will be cost associated with it, you have to worry all the time about every single thing to do. It mentally taxing and the cost is just going to be higher and higher. >These things are generational and accumulated wisdom about privacy, surveillance and their cascading consequences into other aspects of society including sleepwalking into a police state are well known. Human and its society always evolving and changing, you can't expect everything stay static, we human always have to adapt to changing society and environment. >For those on the other side of the police state or who gain from these shifts Then instead we should demand equal transparency for everyone, including those in the government.
- throw2016 8y agoOn the contrary with surveillance there is a 'chilling effect' and people will be constantly wary and not speak their mind. These societal experiences have already happened, are heavily documented and thus we do not have to speculate, we know. The only reason you don't live in a police state and in a democracy is because someone 'cared' about it. Its perfectly valid not to care about these things but its quite another to try to make a virtue out of personal passivity or indifference. Since there is no reference to 'static' in the original comment that is a meaningless straw man, its like telling people fighting against surveillance, anti-democratic or fascist forces not to bother as 'change is inevitable'.
- matz1 8y agoOne way against police state is to fight/demand as much transparency as possible for everyone, including the government. Government want to surveillance the citizen, fine, we should be able to surveillance government too.
- standardUser 8y agoI'm no privacy nut, but I'd rather not have too many strangers making videos of my sexual activity. What would you do, hide under the covers? Make the room as dark as possible? Or just let people record your sexual activity and simply not worry about any videos that may be floating around out there?
- matz1 8y agoI rather simply not worry about any videos that may be floating around out there.
